1 yellow onion, chopped
7½ cups chicken broth
1½ lbs russet potatoes, cleaned and sliced into thin pieces
1½ tsp sugar
½ tsp fennel seeds
1 tsp garlic powder
1½ tsp table salt, plus more to taste if needed
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
2 cups half and half
2 cups packed kale, choped into bite size pieces
finely shredded parmesan cheese for serving
